Genital warts caused by human papillomavirus infection are encountered commonly in primary care. Evidence guiding treatment selection is limited, but treatment guidelines recently have changed. Genital warts are the only visible sign of HPV infection, but they may not appear for weeks, months or even years after infection occurs, if they appear at all. Women are more likely than men to develop warts, and they can grow on the lips of the vulva, around the clitoris, inside the female genital organ, around the urethra, on the cervix, on the area between the female genital organ and the anus (perianal region), and in and around the anus itself. Genital warts in certain cases can be somewhat benign, however in others they may pose a serious health risk to both males and females. In women genital warts, vaginal warts, have been associated with cervical cancer, as well as other cancers. Genital warts affect sexually active people and are the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD). Those at highest risk are people who have multiple sexual partners and a history of STDs.

Genital warts symptoms may also be flat growths that can only be detected with a magnifying device by your doctor. Genital warts differ from the common wart in where they grow in the warm, moist genital areas of the body. Genital warts and HPV infection are transmitted primarily by sexual intimacy, and the risk of infection increases as the number of sexual partners increase.

Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), and resemble warts found on other parts of the body. Human papilloma virus (HPV) types 6,11,16,18 commonly cause anogenital infection, whereas types 1,2,3,4 and 10 cause skin warts. Genital warts look similar to the warts we sometimes see on our hands and feet. All warts are transmitted by skin to skin contact. The warts are soft, moist, pink or flesh-colored bumps. Genital warts may resolve without treatment in immunocompetent patients but may persist and spread in patients with decreased cell-mediated immunity (eg, due to pregnancy, HIV infection).

Genital warts may disappear even without treatment but there is no way to predict this. It is also important to note that even after removal, genital warts can come back because the virus still remains in the body. Genital warts, sometimes referred to as condyloma acuminata, are flesh-colored or gray growths found in the genital area and anal region of both men and women.
