Women can also transmit the HPV virus to the unborn child during pregnancy or delivery. So far over forty strains of HPV have been identified that effect the genital area, of which 2-3 strains are very common and cause the visible genital warts, whereas there are 5-6 strains that are not very common but directly linked to cell carcinoma in the genital area. This fact directly links the genital warts with cancer.

Our body does have a natural immune system that keeps a healthy body protected from virus and bacteria, but some strains of the HPV just remain dormant in the body till such time that the body defence is down, and then commence with the attack on healthy cells. The immune system can be breached when a person is ill, or whenever the white blood cell (WBC) count drops.

What happens then is the HPV begins to replicate its genetic process into the good cell's DNA which in turn becomes an abnormal cell, and these abnormal cells literally nourish on the host body for their growth where fast multiplication is the key objective. Treating, curing, or outright eliminating these replicated abnormal cells is very difficult.

The best measures are definitely the prevention by practicing safe sex. This becomes more paramount on the fact that there exists no simple and complete cure for cancer caused by the HPV, whether by chemotherapy, radiation or even surgery.
