First, according to University of Alabama researcher Browen Lictenstein, with men, STDs are linked to homosexuality. This is a particularly twisted line of thought, with many writing about the affects of “down-low” lifestyles on the rate of HIV/AIDS in the Black Community.

“Down-low” is a slang term used to refer to various activities done on the sly, but most recently the term has been applied to men who do not call themselves gay or bi-sexual, but secretly have sex (often unprotected) with men while having relationships with women. The total impact this lifestyle may be having on Black and Latino communities is not completely clear, but it does reveal a general attitude held by members of the community. Homophobia is real and many people continue to equate casual/hedonistic living with homosexuality. Therefore, both heterosexual and homosexual men need confidential testing to shield them from having their masculinity (as subjective as it is) and moral judgment belittled.

Secondly, with women, STDs are associated with their promiscuity, revealing antiquated notions about how women should behave in relation to men. In both cases the threat of a positive STD test validates homophobic and sexist beliefs and is seen as punishment for immorality.

Furthermore, confidential STD testing helps protect against discrimination. The varying views on morality that may exist within a given organization or company, a person might be alienate by co-workers or even lose their job, if their status is know.

By extending anonymous and confidential STD testing people feel more secure that they can both live healthily and protect their private life from prying and judgmental eyes. Diseases that impact the sexual organs often carry stigma because people can be uncomfortable with sex. It follows then, that if someone is or even believes to be positive for an STD, many may negatively and counterproductively assess their lifestyle. STDs are inherently neutral, infecting people who are good, bad, or anything in between.
