There are several ways to prevent contracting sexually transmitted diseases. One may practice abstinence. It is obvious that STDs are transmitted through sexual activities. So, if one does not practice any form of sexual activities, then STDs will not be able to get near you. Another way is to limit your sex partners. The more partners you have, the more at risk you are from infection. One may not have the chance to screen the medical condition of all their partners. Microbicides are topical compounds that can be used to protect against STDs during rectal or vaginal intercourse. Used in addition to latex condoms or instead of condoms where condoms aren’t acceptable, they are designed to reduce the risk of transmitting infection.

So how does microbicide work? Some scientists found out that the normal acidic pH of the vagina is toxic to most sexually transmitted diseases, but semen neutralizes the vagina during intercourse. So, the microbicide will help keep the ph level of the vagina at normal acid. Some others are even looking for microbicide that can work against STD infection but at the same time allow pregnancy. This type of microbicide could be a miracle for women who wish to protect themselves from the possibility of an STD, but want, or need, to keep having children. Such microbicides would also be particularly useful in areas where STDs are endemic but a woman’s fertility is seen as a major part of her value to society.

Whatever type of prevention one may use, it may defintiely help the society clear the shedding of sexually transmitted diseases. One may do his or her share in stopping the continuous increase of STD cases worldwide. Another way to help in stop shedding the disease is through early detection. If a disease is detected early, the patient will be given treatment right away and preventive measures will have to be followed.

If signs or symptoms show, the person should immediately consult a doctor for testing and treatment. There are several ways to be tested. One may take the local STD testing in a health site or hospital in their area. Or one may look for an STD testing clinic. These clinics offer a more private STD testing which protects their patients’ identity and health condition. One way to have treatment right away is to detect the disease that has infected him or her. Once treatment is in process, the patient will be required to follow preventive measures for him or her not to pass on the disease to other people.
